As in previous year, Nectar Group of Companies sponsored the 2nd edition of the Charles Abela Memorial Cup. This cup is organized by the Mosta FC committee and is made to honour the memory of the club's late President Charles Abela, who is also the founder of Nectar Group. The cup was played at the Charles Abela Memorial Stadium.
Valletta won this second edition of the Cup with victories over Zebbug Rangers and Mosta on Wednesday night.
The current Premier League Champions beat Zebbug 2-0 and hosts Mosta 3-0 to win the triangular tournament. Denni Dos Santos was on target against Zebbug in the first match while captain Gilbert Agius scored a brace in their 3-0 victory over Mosta in the final match of the tournament. Mosta beat Zebbug 1-0 in the second match with a brilliant goal from Jonathan Bajada.
The final classification saw Valletta top with six points, Mosta second with three points and Zebbug third with no points.
At the end, Carlos Abela of Nectar Group presented the Charles Abela trophy to Valletta captain Gilbert Agius.Mosta FC and Zebbug Rangers were presented with mementoes of the occasion while Valletta's winning squad were presented with commemorative medals.
The organisers of the tournament also presented a memento to the three sons of the late Charles Abela who were present at the tournament, Roderick, Mario and Carlos Abela, and thanked them for choosing to sponsor the tournament for another year, and also as a memory of their father.
